A Little Bit About Us
We would like to welcome you to Ye Olde Jolly Sailor at Teignmouth. A delightful traditional waterside pub where you can enjoy our quality local cask ales and fresh, homemade food.
Records in Exeter say that there has been an ale house on this site since 1132, but not in its present form or under its current name, as centuries ago the ferry from Shaldon would land where the fish quay now stands, hence the Jolly Sailor was known as ʹThe Ferryboatʹ.
History has been kind to the pub, surviving the French invasion of the 1690ʹs when they sailed into the estuary and ransacked the town. Fortunately for us the French used the Jolly Sailor as their headquarters and for this reason we are one of the oldest buildings left standing.
The fireplace down in the bottom area of the pub now houses a wood burner, but in past times, was home to many priests who would hide up in the chimney to avoid persecution.
In more recent times the Jolly Sailor has appeared in the 1966 film ʺPressed for Timeʺ starring Norman Wisdom where he was seen running in and out of the bar.
Here at the Ye Olde Jolly Sailor we are a family run public house situated on the Teign estuary. Fish and chip Fridays gives you fresh beer battered cod with chips, peas and salad – two regular fish and chip meals for £10. There is a quiz night every Tuesday with great prizes on every round and don’t forget “Monday Jazz Night” – great local jazz artists from all round devon.
